New York Legalizes Recreational Marijuana, Expunging Former Convictions
New York became the 15th state to legalize recreational cannabis for adults 21 and older on March 31, 2023. The new law allows people to possess up to three ounces of cannabis and grow up to six plants at home. It also expunges previous cannabis convictions and sets up a social equity program to benefit communities disproportionately impacted by the war on drugs.
Cannabis Compounds Block Coronavirus from Entering Cells: Study
A Canadian study found that some cannabis compounds may have the potential to block COVID-19 from entering human cells. The researchers identified 13 cannabis extracts that were able to modulate the levels of a protein that acts as a gateway for the virus. They suggested that these extracts could be used as mouthwashes, gargles, or inhalants to prevent or treat COVID-19 infections.

Virginia Lawmakers Vote to Legalize Marijuana in 2023
Virginia lawmakers voted to amend a bill that originally legalized cannabis in 2024 and instead moved up the date to July 1, 2023. This means that starting this summer, adults 21 and older in Virginia will be able to possess up to an ounce of cannabis and grow up to four plants per household. However, retail sales are not expected to begin until 2024.
New Mexico Governor Announces Cannabis Legalization Task Force
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced the creation of a cannabis legalization task force on April 12, 2023. The task force will be responsible for developing a regulatory framework for the cannabis industry, as well as addressing issues such as taxation, licensing, public safety, and social justice. The governor said she hopes to have a legalization bill ready for the next legislative session in 2024.
