New York became the 15th state to legalize recreational cannabis for adults 21 and older on March 31, 2023. The new law allows people to possess up to three ounces of cannabis and grow up to six plants at home. Virginia lawmakers voted to amend a bill that originally legalized cannabis in 2024 and instead moved up the date to July 1, 2023. This means that starting this summer, adults 21 and older in Virginia will be able to possess up to an ounce of cannabis and grow up to four plants per household.
